Ironic Graphs

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

I feel like I can’t even pick up the morning paper anymore without getting an ironic graph shoved down my throat. Once of these actually came on TV while I was ordering a slice of pizza during my lunch break yesterday. When will we catch a break from this pseudo-news bullcrap? Where will the irony end?
…Sure as hell not on this blog.

Dick’s Diary: 02/20/09

The short week is over and it’s off to another weekend of recording for The Canon Logic. Watching this recording process has got me analyzing the music I listen to on a whole new level. I don’t often think about the details of how a song was built or layered yet the work that goes into a three and a half minute song is often equated to hundreds of hours. But that’s what makes a good musician or a good band isn’t it?…The ability to craft a song so that we the fans hear the complete product, not the just the individual sounds or decisions that have been made along the way. It’s been fun to watch the guys focus in on the details in crafting a certain sound; the sound they want us to hear. It’s a lot like listening to anything by T-Pain (although perfect pitch is certainly an advantage).

Below is a short video of Ron helping Mike and the rest of the guys set up the kick drum to get the low end bass from the kick drum…

lost in october

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Yes, we’re aware that its February and no, this isn’t another post about Sawyer getting drop-kicked.  Lost in October happens to be the band of our very good friend - and very talented axeman - B’ro.  Are you a fan of bitter-sweet dusky melodies and sparkling, complex yet understated riffs?  Then you should check them out tonight at The Bitter End.  They’re on at 10:30.

On a related note, looks like Josh Holloway is “back in the saddle” after that embarrassing incident. And he’s ready to do “what it takes” to get his revenge.  You might even say he’s “crazy.”… … … “Eat the rich.”

Interviews Galore, Other Crap

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Interviews everywhere!!! Actually, just two of ‘em:

Back in October, we did an interview with Annie from You Sing, I Write at CMJ. Part of the interview was used for a CMJ website, but she just recently posted the full interview on the blog. Check it out.

We also did an interview with The Deli Magazine. You can read it in the most recent issue, which is Winter 2009. It looks like this:

In other news, it recently came to our attention that Josh Holloway (aka Sawyer from LOST) was in Aerosmith’s video for Cryin’ back in oh, I don’t know, 1994ish? He’s the guy that steals Alicia Silverstone’s purse and then gets drop-kicked in the face. This makes us happy for several reasons. One, because we’re huge LOST fans. Two, it makes for a nice success story (guy works hard as an actor in the biz for many years before hitting the big time, starting with crappy jobs like the Aerosmith video, working up to an amazing job like working on one of the biggest shows on television). And three: because it forced us to watch the Cryin’ video for the first time in 10 years and remember the hilarious, nonsensical ending.

Enjoy:

By the way, turns out her boyfriend in the video (guy with the ‘C’mon Babe!’-look on his face in the end) is Stephen Dorff from Blade. OK, I’m done.

They’ve Been Writing…

Listening to the guys run through their set for Friday night, it’s obvious how excited they are to get back on stage. Working on the album has led to many exciting creative breakthroughs and the prospect of finally sharing some of them has got them all pretty amped. Because my musical talent is limited to an occasional tambourine solo, I’ll compare their situation to something I’ve experienced as a caterer. For an event of any size, so much thought and effort goes into planning and preparing the perfect meal but none of that matters if it isn’t eaten and enjoyed. The food is nothing without those enjoying it, and likewise, for The Canon Logic, their music is nothing without their fans hearing it. So make sure you come out (and bring your friends) to Southpaw in Park Slope Friday tonight at 11:30 pm.
